Conditions on the Endeavour for both sailor and gentleman, life in the ports they visited, the nail-biting tension of navigating the Great Barrier Reef, the disaster of running aground, the distinguished character of Cook himself, not to mention the uncertainty of whether there was a Great South Land at all, combine to make this a page turner. Told through the eyes of The Goat who actually sailed with Cook and was given honour upon her return, and the voice of the boy who cared for The Goat, and had an island named after him.
