This book tells, in the story-telling style of HE marshall (author of the Our Island Story series) - the story of English literature.  beginning with the tales told by campfires of the gaelic people and Celts, going on to Welsh stories and King Arthur, this thick 545 page book continues on through all the major authors and poets of England, up to Tennyson in the 1800s.  This is not a book of short biographies, but a seamless story, running from the life of one person , through how they lived, interesting things about their families and where they lived, and the times, onto the next person.  In each chapter are many excerpts from their writings, with marshall's thoughtful comments on the style and content.  At the end of each chapter are suggestions of which works by this author the reader would do well to read through.  You could use this as a high school course in this way.  (This book has a boring cover becasue it is printed to order. - This is very quick. )  For Gde 7 - 10.
